What are you practicing?

We’ve all heard the phrase, “practice makes perfect”. But when it comes to personal growth and well-being, it’s less about perfection and more about being intentional and consistent in our practices. Coaching often emphasizes the power of regular habits like mindfulness, self-compassion, boundary-setting, gratitude, and aligning with core values to create balance and fulfillment.

According to the Oxford Dictionary, practice is defined as “the application or use of an idea, belief, or method, as opposed to theories relating to it”. In other words, it’s not just about knowing something, it’s about embodying it through action.

The Power of Practice

The practices we engage in daily shape our reality. They determine not only what we achieve but, more importantly, how we feel. Sometimes, we unknowingly practice behaviors that don’t support our well-being or goals. For instance, a people-pleaser may habitually say yes when they want to say no, valuing support and connection but at the cost of their own boundaries and self-care. Their practice is out of alignment with how they truly want to show up for themselves.

The good news? Awareness is the first step to change.

How to Identify and Shift Your Practices

 Try this simple reflection exercise:

1. Acknowledge what you are currently practicing.

·      Example: Doom-scrolling on social media.

2. With curiosity, ask yourself what values this behavior aligns with.

·      Example: Staying informed, seeking knowledge, feeling prepared.

3. Notice how it makes you feel.

·      Example: Anxious and stressed.

4. Clarify how you want to feel instead.

·      Example: Relaxed and at peace.

5. Identify the conflict and choose one small action that supports the feeling you desire.

·      Example: Practicing mindfulness, setting boundaries around media consumption.

 Choose Your Experience

Transformation doesn’t happen overnight - it happens through consistent, intentional practice. The key is to experiment, show up, and learn from the process. What you practice daily is shaping your future.

So, what are you practicing? And is it leading you where you want to go?
